Living Autumn Centerpiece Workshop
Charlotte Crissey, a Garden Club of Johnstown member, conducted a workshop for the community at Gallery on Gazebo located at 140 Gazebo Place in downtown Johnstown on Saturday, November 18, 2023. Using Charlotte’s model as an example (pictured left), pumpkins were primed using spray glue so that a layer of moss would adhere to the top of the pumpkin. Materials, consisting of a variety of succulents, acorns, pine cones, various natural materials and greens, were arranged on top of the moss and attached using a glue gun.
Instructions for Care were given. For a long-lasting centerpiece, protect your succulent topped pumpkin from harsh sun, excessive heat, freezing temperatures, vents that can cause major temperature shifts and rain. To keep the materials fresh, good air circulation is essential. It should be given bright, indirect light by setting it near a window indoors or on a sheltered deck or balcony. Place a 1/4- inch thick-piece of cardboard under the pumpkin to prevent it from rotting prematurely. Spritz the plants with water on top once a week to moisten and hydrate any new roots that might form. Avoid letting water pool around the pumpkin’s stem.
To transition the succulents to a more permanent home once the pumpkin is past its prime, slice off the very top of the pumpkin. Nestle the arrangement atop potting soil in a container. As the pumpkin top decomposes the succulents will root into the soil.
Pumpkins of various colors and sizes can be used and add interest to the decor.
Pumpkins were one of a kind! No two were the same. Participants were very pleased with their finished designs. We think they look awesome!
